Privacy Policy
Last updated: May 13, 2026
Subbun is a Chrome extension that translates Japanese video subtitles into English. This policy explains what data we collect, what we don't collect, and what we do with it.
What we do NOT collect
- Subtitle text. Translation runs entirely in your browser using Chrome's built-in on-device AI APIs (Gemini Nano and the Translator API). Subtitle content never leaves your computer.
- The pages you visit or videos you watch. URLs, titles, video IDs, and search queries are never logged or sent.
- Your account data on any streaming service. Subbun never reads, transmits, or stores credentials, cookies, or identifiers from YouTube, Netflix, Prime, or any other supported site.
What we collect
- An anonymous instance ID. A randomly generated UUID created on install. We use it to validate Pro license keys against our license server. It is not tied to your name, email, or any account.
- Your Pro license key, if you have one. Used only to verify your subscription is active. Provided by Lemon Squeezy (our merchant of record) at purchase time.
- Optional anonymous usage stats. If telemetry is enabled (default on; opt out in the popup): aggregate counts of how many lines were translated, which engines succeeded, and caught errors with Japanese text scrubbed out. No content, no URLs, no identifiers.
Where data goes when it goes anywhere
- License server:
api.getsubbun.com. Receives only your instance ID and license key during activation and periodic re-validation. - Payment processing: handled entirely by Lemon Squeezy, our merchant of record. We never see your card details.
Permissions
Subbun requests these Chrome permissions and uses them for the following:
- storage — to remember your settings and license state.
- activeTab / scripting — to inject the translation overlay into the supported video and form sites.
- alarms — to refresh your license check once a day.
- offscreen — to pre-warm the on-device AI model so the first subtitle appears quickly.
- host_permissions — limited to the supported video sites (YouTube, Netflix, Prime, Abema, Niconico, Crunchyroll, TVer, NHK Plus, U-NEXT, Disney+, Hulu Japan).
Your rights and choices
- Opt out of anonymous usage stats anytime in the popup settings.
- Deactivate your Pro license to remove it from this device.
- Uninstall the extension — all local data is removed by Chrome automatically.
- Email support@getsubbun.com to request deletion of any server-side records associated with your instance ID or license key.
Children
Subbun is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes
We may update this policy as the product evolves. Material changes will be noted at the top of this page with a new "Last updated" date. Continued use of the extension after a change means you accept the updated policy.
