Getting started

How do I install Subbun? +

Go to the Chrome Web Store listing, click "Add to Chrome," and confirm the permissions prompt. The first time you open a Japanese video on a supported site, Subbun will warm up the on-device AI model (a few seconds) and then translations appear automatically.

Why aren't English subtitles appearing? +
  • Confirm the platform's Japanese captions are turned on (the CC button on the player). Subbun reads those captions; it doesn't transcribe audio.
  • Confirm your Chrome version is 138 or newer. Open chrome://version to check.
  • On first use, the Japanese→English language pack may still be downloading. A progress banner appears in the top-right.
  • Some Japanese sites have no caption track at all — Subbun has nothing to read in that case.
What sites does Subbun work on? +

Free tier: YouTube. Pro tier unlocks Netflix, Amazon Prime, Abema, Niconico, Crunchyroll, TVer, NHK Plus, U-NEXT, Disney+, and Hulu Japan (11 sites total). If your favorite JP site isn't on the list, email us and we'll prioritize it.

Subscriptions and licenses

Where do I get my license key? +

After purchase, Lemon Squeezy emails you the license key. Paste it into the popup. Activation is instant once the key is valid.

How do I activate Pro on a new computer? +

Install the extension on the new computer, open the popup, paste the same license key. Each license supports up to three active devices. If you've maxed out, deactivate one of your existing devices via its popup, then activate the new one.

How do I cancel my subscription? +

Click the "Manage subscription" link in the receipt Lemon Squeezy emailed you. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period; you keep Pro until then. Or email support@getsubbun.com and we'll do it for you.

What's the refund policy? +

No-questions refunds within 60 days of purchase, via Lemon Squeezy. Email support@getsubbun.com with your order number and we'll process it.

Translation quality

What's Quality mode? +

A toggle in the popup that makes the extension use only Gemini Nano (highest quality) and skip the basic Translator API fallback. When the LLM is busy or recovering from an error, some lines will have no subtitle rather than a clunky one. Recommended for anime / drama viewers who care about translation quality. Default is off — most viewers prefer "every line gets a subtitle" over "every line is polished."

The translation got a character name wrong. How do I fix it? +

Open the popup → Glossary textbox. Add one line per name you want pinned, in this format: 悟空 → Goku. Future translations will always render that name exactly as you specify. Useful for anime and drama where the same characters appear across many episodes.

Honorifics like -san or -chan are missing. +

Subbun automatically preserves honorifics on properly-detected names. If they're getting dropped on a specific character, add an entry to the glossary: 田中さん → Tanaka-san. That forces the rendering on every line.

Privacy

Does my subtitle text get sent anywhere? +

No. All translation happens on your device using Chrome's built-in AI. Subtitle text never leaves your computer. Full details on the privacy policy.

How do I opt out of usage stats? +

Open the popup → toggle off "Send anonymous usage stats." The setting takes effect immediately and any pending events are dropped without sending.
